Residents of Abia State have been advised to save the State from flood disaster by cleaning up the water drainages around their homes.

This advice was handed by the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sam Nwogu in Umuahia after supervising the monthly clean up exercise in the State.

He alerted the residents that the 2023 rainy season is coming with the challenges of flooding, which entails that every nook and cranny of the State must be cleaned up to allow free flow of water whenever it rains.

Nwogu, who was represented by Mrs Obi-Maduka Ihuaku, a Deputy Director of environmental health in the Abia Ministry of environment, expressed concern at the attitude of some residents of the State who empty their wastes into water channels, despite repeated warnings by the ministry.

He pointed out that apart from flooding, several diseases could explode from unclean environments and charged the residents to see it as duty to fully participate in regular clean up of their environment.

Track news observed that traders at Orie Ugba market in Umuahia shunned the ‘No Movement Order’ of the State government during the 9 am to 11 am clean up period.

They maintained their business activities in disregard to the State government’s directive
