Flooding has killed 51 people in Adamawa.
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
According to the Adamawa State Government, 51 people died in the state’s recent flood disaster.
More corpses were recovered as flood waters receded in some submerged communities, according to the state Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), which made the announcement on Saturday when the North East Development Commission (NEDC) visited to donate relief materials.
Speaking to reporters earlier on the sidelines of the NEDC event, ADSEMA Executive Secretary Mohammed Suleiman said that after the state recorded 37 flood-related deaths last month, 11 more deaths have been uncovered as bodies have become exposed in formerly submerged communities where flood water has now receded.
“Water has begun to recede in most of our communities, and some displaced persons have begun to return home,” he said. About three IDP camps remain open, the majority of which are in Madagali. IDPs are people whose homes have been washed away by flooding or have been destroyed beyond repair.
“The death toll now stands at 51.” That concludes the update. We recovered some bodies as the water receded in some communities. We had to call the Nigeria Police and traditional rulers to report such bodies and bury them.”
The NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, who led other management officers in formally handing over relief materials to the state government for onward delivery to flood and other disaster victims, said the items fulfilled a pledge made by the commission during World Humanitarian Day earlier in August.
