Fire service breaks silence on what spread fire at Bodija Market
By Adeleye Kunle
According to the Oyo State Fire Service, several kegs of petrol stored in some of the shops aided the Monday morning fire incident at the Bodija Market in Ibadan.
Mr Ismail Adeleke, the agency’s Director of Operations, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ibadan.
Adeleke, on the other hand, stated that the agency was still investigating the root cause of the fire.
According to him, one Ayo Akeredolu from Ibadan’s Yemetu Police Station called the agency at 5.35 a.m. on Monday to report the fire.
“We responded quickly with a 27,000-litre capacity truck carrying water to the market and began putting out the fire.”
“Another 10,000-litre capacity truck joined our operation to put out the fire.”
“However, during our operation, we discovered that most of the shops had grinding machines and some kegs of gasoline, which contributed to the spread of the inferno.”
“However, we are grateful to God that we were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to the fourth block,” he said.
Adeleke stated that additional investigation would reveal the root cause of the fire.
As a result, he warned residents, particularly traders, to avoid careless storage of flammable substances, despite the state’s current scarcity of gasoline.
The fire, according to NAN, affected three blocks, each with 11 lock up shops, on Ori-Igi Lane in the market.
The inferno was also estimated to have destroyed property worth millions of naira. (NAN)
