A tragic incident occurred in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where a man was electrocuted while working on high tension cable at Ekeki, opposite the police station in Azikoro Road.
The incident happened on Friday evening, causing panic and commotion among residents and passersby in the area. The victim, identified as John Ibekwe, a 35-year-old electrical technician, was reportedly carrying out maintenance work on an electric pole when he came into contact with a live wire.
Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, stating that Ibekwe was seen dangling from the pole, unconscious, before his lifeless body was eventually brought down by emergency responders.
“I was just nearby when I heard a loud spark and saw the man hanging from the pole. It was terrifying,” said Chinedu Okeke, a local shop owner. “People started screaming and running towards the scene, but there was nothing anyone could do.”
Despite immediate efforts to revive him, Ibekwe was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who arrived shortly after the incident. The police have since cordoned off the area, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether there were any breaches of safety protocols.
Residents of Ekeki have expressed their shock and sorrow over the tragic event, calling for improved safety measures and better training for technicians working with high-voltage equipment.
