It is no longer news that the former inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu has been replaced by President Muhammadu Buhari. This came as a surprise as weeks ago, back in February, Buhari extended his service by another 3 months when he should have been retired after 35 years of service.

However, the President kept to its initial statement that Adamu’s service extension will allow the government to select a suitable replacement, and has now named Usman Alkali as the new Acting Inspector General of the Nigerian Police force.

When the announcement of the new police chief was made by Maigari Dingyadi, the minister of police affairs during a press briefing at the State House in Abuja, a number of people did not know that Mohammed Adamu was out of the country’s capital.

It can be recalled that hours ago, the police headquarters in Owerri, Imo State, was attacked by gunmen, who destroyed vehicles and damaged valuables during a midnight raid.

In a bid to carry out his duty as head of the Police force in Nigeria, Mohammed Adamu took a trip out to Owerri, the Imo state capital where he was probably making a first hand assessment of the level of damage that was suffered by the federal facility. It was during this mission that he was removed as Police chief and replaced by his successor Maigari Dingyadi.
