Notice/Government Reporter needed @ TrackNews Online

TrackNews Nigeria is a leading independent News Site with a primary focus on Nigeria and World News in general.

We are looking to hire a curious State Government Reporter, who will work collaboratively with other political reporters, and other reporters in beats in diverse areas of government and businesses to uncover news and report on ongoing issues.

The State Government Reporter will:

1. Have a track record of digging up scoops.

2. Develop diverse and knowledgeable sources in state governments and the broader political community.

3. Write quickly on daily news stories and craft clear, focused enterprise stories that create an impact.

4. Become the authority on state government and know how actions at the state levels affect municipalities.

5. Approach assignments on deadline with strong communication and follow through with the Politics editor and colleagues.

6. Establish and expand our social media presence and identify stories that will drive readership, using callouts and audience analytics.

7. Embrace an inclusive approach to story generation, reporting and sourcing.

8. Work with colleagues in photo/video graphics/interactives and the digital audience team to create visually rich projects and explore creative new story forms.

9. Publicly represent TrackNews
at events, as needed, including political debates.

Qualifications

1. Experience: At least three years’ experience as a government or politics reporter for a daily newsgathering organization.

2. Education: Bachelor’s degree or relevant equivalent experience.

3. Ability to file public-record requests and search databases.

4. Strong command of standards, ethics and mission of journalism.

5. Demonstrate a deep understanding of government and its processes.

6. Ability to analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, fairness, etc., under pressure and on deadline.

7. Cultural competence and awareness of best practices related to inclusive journalism.

8. Collaborative spirit; diplomacy when communicating up, down and across teams.

9. Experience in traditional, shoe-leather reporting, as well as using social media to find and source stories.

10. Familiarity with analytics is also a necessity.
