The National President of Mwaghavul Development Association, Joseph Gwankat says death toll has risen to 85 after the deadly attacks on Fungzai and Kubwat villages in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday after a security meeting at the palace of the traditional ruler in Mangu, he explained that the search in the affected communities for missing persons was still ongoing.

The police, however, have yet to give the casualty figure on the attacks in the two villages.

According to him, several communities were attacked by suspected Fulani militias at the same time, leading to killings, burning of houses and the destruction of farmlands in the affected communities, worth millions of naira.

Following the incessant attacks, protesting women besieged the palace of the traditional ruler where the security meeting was being held with security chiefs, district heads, and government officials led by the deputy governor, Professor Sonni Tyoden.

The Mishkcham Mwaghavul, John Putmang, the Council chairman and district heads from the communities, appealed for security reinforcement to the communities to safeguard citizens and their valuables.

According to Joseph Gwankat, “Fifty-seven (57) victims were given a mass burial on Wednesday amid tears by relatives and members of the community who gathered to witness the funeral service.”
