Reactions as Girl, 11, dies of alleged torture in Plateau

Margareth, an 11-year-old girl, died as a result of the trauma of wounds sustained as a result of torture at the hands of her guardian.

The girl, who died at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), reportedly had wounds on both sides of her buttocks and back that went untreated until they became infected and caused health complications.

According to a source, the deceased was neglected by her guardian despite her wounds until she was eventually helped by a neighbor who took her to a private hospital in Vom for treatment of her wounds. The girl was referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) after her injury became infected, and she died there.

According to the source, the police later arrested her guardian, Mrs Nnemeka Nwachukwu, who was accused of inflicting the child’s wounds.

Mrs Grace Pam, the Plateau State director of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), who reportedly confirmed the incident, stated that the victim was trafficked from Kebbi State and handed over to her guardian in Jos as a housemaid.

While confirming the incident, DSP Alfred Alabo, the Plateau State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), explained that the case is under investigation and assured that the woman involved has been transferred to the state CID for a thorough investigation and eventual prosecution.
