Sokoto State Committee Reveals Rampant Misappropriation of Government Vehicles by Former Officials

Published

on

In a startling revelation, the Sokoto State Committee for the Review of Wasteful and Unnecessary Government Assets disclosed that 745 government vehicles were unlawfully taken by appointees of the previous administration led by Aminu Tambuwal.

Shockingly, only 32 of these vehicles have been recovered, with 40 traced to Niger Republic.

Presenting the committee’s findings to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Chairman Alhaji Jelani Kalgo exposed additional financial irregularities, including the sale of a government property for N60 million, with only N30 million remitted. Kalgo detailed that former commissioners, special advisers, and chief executives possessed 302 vehicles, while local government areas held 443, with 40 of them leased to private individuals and transported beyond state and national borders.

The misappropriated vehicles encompassed crucial machinery such as six graders, six payloaders, three rollers, nine tippers, four water tankers, and two fire service tankers. Kalgo expressed deep concern, noting that 70% of the 443 vehicles at local government levels were found to be non-operational.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu was briefed that the committee, during its investigations across all 23 local government areas, uncovered vehicles hidden in remote locations within the state metropolis. The report underscores a disconcerting pattern of misuse and negligence, demanding urgent action to rectify the mismanagement of state resources.
