Southern Ijaw:Youth’s lauds Diri, Declares no vacancy in Creek Heaven.

Southern Ijaw is the major oil producing area in Bayelsa State and the largest local government area in the state, but, has remained without access road since the creation of the state on October 1, 1996.

The situation which had exposed the residents of the communities trying to access other parts of the state, especially Yenagoa, the state capital, the risk of travelling by sea.

For instance, during the last senatorial by-election in the state, about seven police officers who ferried election materials to Oporoma, the Southern Ijaw headquarters, were drowned in River Nun, aside from other cases of boat mishaps frequently experienced along the route.

However, 25 years later there is a concerted effort by the government to extend a road from Yenagoa across several communities and creeks to Oporoma.

The road project, which been incubated since 1960, was in the pipeline until Gov Douye Diri flagged of construction on assumption of office and today the road which the construction work is being handled CCECC has passed Aguobiri community and reached Angiama community in preparation for a longer bridge across River Nun to Oporoma the headquarter of Southern Ijaw LGA.

Southern Ijaw Youths across party lines who could not shy away from the reality on ground, came out in their thousands as early as 6:30 am on Wednesday 7th. November 2022, on the spot assessment tour, to see the level of the Long bridge across River Nun to Oporoma.

Youths leaders, from Aguobiri and Angiama communities respectively,, expressed happiness that in their lifetime a road has crossed these communities, noting that before now it was very difficult accessing Yenagoa, and that many indigenes of these communities had lost their lives while travelling on the sea.

“It is now that we know that we have a government in Bayelsa State, and they care for us. Many indigenes of Aguobiri and other neighbouring communities have not been to the state capital before because of the difficulties and risks associated with travelling on the sea, but we are driving straight to Yenagoa,” The Youth leaders said.

Appreciating Senator Douye Diri, the leader of the group who doubles as SSA to the governor in Youths Mobilization Comr. Robert Igali (JP) and the president of Southern Ijaw Federated Youths council Comr Jerry Magnus expressed happiness over the road construction, they said, it had drastically reduced criminality in the area, because security operatives could easily access the communities.

Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri alongside his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and other top government functionaries today, received Youths of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the State.

Track News reported, that the Youths were at the Government House to thank and they handed over to him a letter of communique from the Youths and a well grapht Giant Portrait with the Incription “His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri, The Hero of Development, Southern Ijaw Local Government area ” was presented by the Youths to the Governor in appreciation of his good works and developmental strides of the governor in the Local Government Area, especially the ongoing construction of Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie road which has reached Angiama community.

Recall, that the youths who had earlier toured to the road project, and visited the ongoing construction of the bridge linking Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Governor Diri while addressing the Youths said the priority of Bayelsa and the government is to link the riverine communities by roads.

The governor thanked the people of Southern Ijaw for standing by the government, and making sure that the road construction does not stop. He particularly thanked the leader of the state
