What you should know about Tinubu’s running mate, Shettima

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the 2023 general elections, has announced the appointment of Kashim Shettima as his running mate ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Track News reports.

Recall Tinubu had previously submitted Kabiru Masari’s name as a placeholder in order to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) July 15 deadline for political parties to submit the final names of their presidential candidates and running mates.

Tinubu was said to have narrowed his running mate choices to either Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum or his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Shettima will be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, the party’s leader, on Sunday in Daura, Katsina State.

Here are some facts about Shettima, Tinubu’s new running mate for the APC presidential nomination:

Shettima, 55, was born on September 2, 1966, and is a politician from Maiduguri, Borno State.

Kashim attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978; Government Community Secondary School, Biu in southern Borno State from 1978 to 1980; and Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighboring Yobe State) from 1980 to 1983.

He earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri in 1989.

Shettima earned a master’s degree (MSc) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991 before joining the University of Maiduguri as a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics from 1991 to 1993.

Shettima began her career in banking, working for the now-defunct Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as the head of the accounts unit at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State, from 1993 to 1997.

Shettima joined African International Bank Limited as a Deputy Manager in 1997 and rose through the ranks to become a Manager in 2001. In 2001, he joined Zenith Bank as the head of its Maiduguri branch, where he rose to the positions of Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East).

Shettima left Zenith Bank as General Manager in 2007 after being appointed Commissioner of Finance in Borno State.

He was an Agricultural Economist at the Commercial Bank of Africa’s Ikeja Office in Lagos State from 1993 to 1997, and later became deputy manager and manager at the African International Bank Limited’s Kaduna Branch from 1997 to 2001.

Shettima was appointed Deputy Manager/Branch Head of Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri Office in 2001, and five years later was promoted to General Manager. He was named Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in 2007.

Under his predecessor, Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, he later became Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and later Health.

Shettima, a Muslim politician from the Kanuri tribe, is the current Senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District and a former governor of Borno state.

Shettima was the governor of Borno State from May 2011 to May 29, 2019.

Shettima was succeeded by his preferred candidate, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, who succeeded former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.

From 2007 to 2011, he served as Commissioner in five Ministries: Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs (2008), Education (2009), Agriculture and Natural Resources (2010), and finally the Ministry of Health, where he contested the Governorship in 2011, which he won on the platform of the now-defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, and was inaugurated on May 29, 2011.

Shettima was re-elected in 2015 by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and was unanimously elected Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, an umbrella body of Governors from the 19 northern Nigerian states. So far, he has been driving key changes in the affairs of the forum, with a focus on promoting northern unity and revitalizing ailing northern States’ industries.

Shettima won the Borno Central Senatorial District election in February 2019, succeeding Senator Babakaka Bashir.

Shettima was the Director-General of Tinubu Campaign Organisation prior to his appointment as Tinubu’s running mate.

Fighting insurgency: After taking office in 2011, Shettima managed the challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgency as Governor of Borno State.

In 2013, his government formally established the Civilian JTF with the approval of the National Security Adviser and the Nigerian Army.

Shettima facilitated victims’ reconstruction, rehabilitation, and resettlement, with a focus on expanding and remodeling existing schools as well as constructing new boarding primary and junior secondary schools to accommodate over 50, 000 unaccompanied orphans whose parents were killed by insurgents across the State’s 27 local government areas.

Governor Kashim Shettima’s leadership credentials have received positive recognition both within and outside of Nigeria.

Governor Shettima emerged the 2014 Governor of the Year (Leadership Newspapers), Governor of the Year, 2015, (Nigeria Union of Journalists, national body); Governor of the Year, 2015 (NewsWatchTimes Newspapers); Governor of the Year, 2015 (Vanguard Newspapers); Governor of the Year, 2016 (Tell Magazine); 2017 Zik Prize for Leadership; Kaduna NUJ Award for courage and exceptional leadership (2017), FCT NUJ Merit Award for exceptional Leadership, 2017.
