ECOWAS to prepare standby force, takes decision on Niger Republic
Heads of state and government from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met on Sunday in Abuja, where they pledged to step up efforts in key areas like counterterrorism, regional security, and democratic governance.
Top of the agenda was the need to address terrorism threats plaguing the region. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating this scourge and instructed the ECOWAS Commission to expedite plans for deploying a regional counterterrorism force. The summit also called for increased funding for joint maritime operations and closer collaboration among member states on security matters.
In response to recent political turmoil, the summit condemned the military takeover in Niger and urged the junta to immediately release President Mohammed Bazoum and restore constitutional order. A committee of heads of state was formed to engage with the junta on a short transition roadmap and monitoring mechanisms. Leaders also pledged to gradually ease sanctions based on progress made.
The summit commended peaceful elections held in Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Liberia during the year. They also welcomed the peaceful resolution of the electoral dispute in Nigeria and the dialogue between the opposition and government in Sierra Leone. Leaders further emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional norms and respecting the rule of law in all member states.
