In what authorities are describing as a case of intimate partner violence, a 36-year-old Nigerian man, Lucky Ogbeijielele, has been arrested by police in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, for allegedly stabbing his mother-in-law to death.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1, 2025. A 32-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect’s wife, also suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.
According to a statement released by the Greater Sudbury Police Service, officers responded to a domestic violence-related call just after 12:35 a.m. on July 2, at a home on Lorne Street. Reports indicated that two individuals had been seriously injured following a violent altercation.
Upon arrival, officers found the injured woman outside the home. She was promptly transported to hospital by paramedics. When police entered the residence to check on others inside, they discovered a 63-year-old woman—later confirmed to be the suspect’s mother-in-law—suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two young children were also located inside the home. Fortunately, they were unharmed physically.
Authorities initially reported that the suspect had fled before officers arrived. A manhunt was launched, and shortly before 11:30 a.m., officers located the suspect in a wooded area near Alder Street. He was found with what police described as self-inflicted injuries. He was taken into custody without resistance and was transported to hospital for medical care, though he remains under police supervision.
Police confirmed that the man is now facing multiple charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, including:
• First-degree murder
• Attempted murder
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Forcible confinement
• Choking
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, including canvassing the area for surveillance footage. A search warrant has been executed at the residence, and members of the K9 Unit are conducting a detailed ground search for additional evidence.
Authorities are urging anyone with further information related to the case to contact the police.
