Nigerian Police Warn Against Planned Nationwide Protest on April 7, 2025

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a public warning cautioning citizens against participating in a planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025. The announcement was made just hours after reports surfaced online that several groups were mobilizing for a mass demonstration over economic hardship, insecurity, and governance concerns.
In a statement released on Sunday, April 6, police authorities said intelligence reports indicate that certain individuals and groups are planning to stage protests in various parts of the country. According to the police, such gatherings could potentially disrupt public peace and may be hijacked by criminal elements.
The police emphasized that while the right to peaceful protest is recognized under the Nigerian Constitution, any activity that threatens national security or public order will not be tolerated. Law enforcement officials stated that they have not received any formal notice or request for police protection from the organizers of the planned protest, as is required by law.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police to maintain law and order across all states. He warned that any attempt to incite violence or cause civil unrest under the guise of a protest would be met with strict enforcement of the law. He further advised parents and guardians to restrain their children and wards from joining any unauthorized gathering.
The planned protest, which has gained traction on social media platforms with hashtags calling for mass action, is believed to be driven by growing frustration over rising inflation, fuel scarcity, poor electricity supply, and alleged government inaction on key issues. Some civil society groups and youth-led movements have expressed support for the protest, urging citizens to peacefully voice their grievances.
However, security agencies maintain that the timing and coordination of the protest raise concerns, especially with the country facing heightened tension in various regions. The police said they are working closely with other security agencies to monitor developments and respond swiftly to any threats.
Previous protests in Nigeria, such as the #EndSARS demonstrations of 2020, have drawn significant national and international attention. While many of those gatherings began peacefully, some escalated into violent clashes, resulting in loss of lives and property. The police say they are determined to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
In its warning, the Nigeria Police also urged citizens to explore lawful channels for expressing dissent, such as petitions, dialogue, and engagement with relevant authorities. They encouraged community leaders, religious institutions, and traditional rulers to play a role in discouraging actions that could destabilize their localities.
As of the time of this report, no official group has publicly claimed responsibility for organizing the protest. Still, online messages and posters continue to circulate, calling for Nigerians to occupy major streets and government buildings nationwide.
The police have assured the public that adequate security measures are in place to ensure safety and order across the country. Citizens are advised to go about their daily activities without fear but to avoid participating in any unauthorized protest.
More updates are expected as the situation develops.
