Nigeria has started the second phase of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a project in partnership with Germany’s Siemens Energy to significantly improve the country’s electricity supply.
The initiative, which began with an agreement signed in 2023, aims to eventually inject 12,000 megawatts of power into the national grid.
The first phase successfully delivered 10 transformers and 10 mobile substations, which are now being installed across Nigeria to strengthen the grid.
According to Bolaji Tunji, the media adviser to the Minister of Power, the new phase will focus on upgrading and building power lines. This includes seven upgraded existing lines and ten new ones, which will span 544 kilometers and be able to carry 7,140 megawatts of power.
Nigeria will use domestic funds to support the international financing secured for this stage of the project.
The overall goal of the PPI is to improve power reliability and accessibility for millions of Nigerians.
