The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has appealed to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend its strike which began August 2, 2021.

The NMA made this appeal yesterday, after its Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM) with its affiliates, including NARD, Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) and the Medical and Dental Doctors in Academics (MEDSABAM).

After the meeting which was meant to review the progress made concerning the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the NMA.

The NMA therefore urged the striking doctors to consider suspending its strike while it engages the Federal Government to meet their sundry demands.

Speaking with The Nation, the First Vice President of NARD, Dr Chima Edoga, said: “The meeting ended in a rowdy session but the NMA is appealing to NARD to consider suspending the strike while they take up the items that they signed in the Memorandum of Understanding with the government.

“The NARD will have its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting tomorrow (today) to reach a decision. We made it clear that the timelines set by the government in the memorandum of understanding have elapsed. So we want to give the government more time to implement everything that is in the memorandum of understanding signed with the NMA.”
