Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports.
The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu has urged the international community to intervene and compel Nigeria to immediately and unconditionally release Kanu and refrain from further persecution of the proscribed group.
“We see this press statement as a meaningless diatribe that comports with the self-deception and self-delusion that has guided the so-called CNG since the present era,” the family said in a statement signed by the family’s head, Mazi Kanunta Kanu, on behalf of the Kanu Family, titled “Re: Northern coalition faults UN call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, by Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG).
After considering the letter, spirit, and intent of the press statement, the Kanu family concluded that the CNG statement exemplifies “the general disdain and arrogance with which a section of the North (not the entire North) always treats anything Southern Nigerian, particularly Biafraland or Ndigbo.”
“It is this same bad attitude that has informed the majority of the grave errors in judgment that have collectively manifested in the crushing insecurity that has ravaged the North since 2015, when these shadowy Northerners began to infiltrate and infest the corridors of the Federal Government of Nigeria.”
“The first impression that emanates from their press release is that a slew of Northern groups from across the North have united in opposition to the United Nations directive to release Nnamdi Kanu.” We know this is not true.
“What we know for a fact is that it is the same cabal that has always subjugated Northern Nigeria and troubled Nigeria as a whole that would have the audacity to express such contempt for the United Nations, thinking, of course, that the United Nations is like the rest of Nigeria that has become their punching bag.”
“We also know that the indigenous peoples of the North (the true North) reject the hypocrisy emanating from the shadowy and dubious North that the CNG claims to represent.”
We are confident that those indigenous peoples are as shocked as the rest of us at Nigeria’s foolish decision to ignore the United Nations.
“We also know that the shadowy North, which loves injustice and romanticizes terrorism, is disintegrating.” It is unraveling on its own. It is having a meltdown as a result of their realization that the day of reckoning is approaching.
“It is reeling from self-inflicted insecurity, which has unleashed an unprecedented regime of terror merchants spanning the Sahel to the heart of Nigeria.”
“It’s the same shadowy North that a recent BBC documentary (titled Terror Merchants of Zamfara) exposed, much to the BBC’s chagrin.” The same shadowy North that provides sanctuary to terrorists would like the Federal government to disregard the directives of a world body, the United Nations, of which Nigeria is a member.
“Any North that sees nothing wrong with the widespread terror in the North and refuses to consider the true meaning of the Kuje jailbreak, preferring to be bordered by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (an unarmed prisoner of conscience), is not the true North.” It is the erroneous North.
“The only reason they still have an audience and the clout to speak is because the true North permits it.” But how long will this last?
“For the avoidance of doubt, this shadowy, false North calling on the Federal government to go rogue on the United Nations should understand that such action will be suicidal, if not now, then later.” If they have any doubts, they should go ask Sani Abacha how he turned Nigeria into a pariah state by committing the same acts of state lawlessness that the CNG is now demanding.
“They should consult their lawyers (if they have any) about the scope, reach, and inviolability of UN Opinions, Directives, or Decisions.”
“If they do not have lawyers among them, they can contact the United Nations directly or visit its website.” There, they will discover that this Opinion on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release (like similar ones before it) is binding on Nigeria.
“It is as binding as any other United Nations adjudicatory Opinion that resulted in the abolition of apartheid in South Africa, a referendum in Ethiopia/Eritrea, a referendum in Kosovo, and a referendum in South Sudan.” Opinions like this influenced the deployment of United Nations peacekeeping forces around the world.”
