Olayemi Michael Ojulari has officially taken over as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), succeeding Mele Kyari. The leadership transition marks a significant shift for Nigeria’s state-owned oil company as it continues efforts to enhance efficiency and address challenges in the country’s energy sector.

Ojulari, a seasoned petroleum engineer with decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, was appointed to the role following Kyari’s exit. His appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the management of NNPCL, which plays a critical role in Nigeria’s oil production, refining, and energy policies.

Before assuming the top position, Ojulari held key leadership roles in the industry, including serving as the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo). His expertise spans upstream, midstream, and downstream operations, positioning him as a strategic choice to lead NNPCL at a time when the company is undergoing structural and operational reforms.

Mele Kyari, who had served as NNPCL’s CEO since 2019, was instrumental in the transformation of the company from a government corporation into a commercially driven entity under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). His tenure saw major developments, including the acquisition of a stake in the Dangote Refinery, efforts to boost domestic refining capacity, and initiatives aimed at tackling fuel subsidy challenges.

As the new head of NNPCL, Ojulari is expected to focus on increasing oil production, improving the country’s refining capacity, and addressing issues related to fuel supply and distribution. His leadership comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to attract more investments into its oil and gas sector while balancing the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Stakeholders in the industry have expressed optimism about Ojulari’s appointment, citing his extensive experience and track record in the sector. However, he faces significant challenges, including oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and the need for reforms to ensure that NNPCL operates as a profitable and globally competitive energy company.
