Chelsea announced the signing of Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly from Serie A club Napoli.
The signing was confirmed by the Blues in a statement posted on their website on Saturday.
The four-year contract is said to be worth £33.8 million.
Following the arrival of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Koulibaly becomes Chelsea’s second signing of the season.
“Kalidou Koulibaly is Chelsea’s second signing this summer!” “The defender joins Chelsea on a four-year deal from Napoli,” Chelsea said in a statement.
“Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy’s international teammate, will significantly strengthen our defensive options following the departures of Toni Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.”
“Widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world, the Senegalese possesses all of the qualities required of an elite modern defender.” He is an excellent game reader, a goal threat, and an excellent possession player, equally at home bringing the ball out or playing progressive passes to put his team on the attack. During his eight years at Napoli, he has played in both a back three and a back four.
“Senegal’s captain, Koulibaly, is a natural leader with a strong personality.” He has plenty of experience competing for domestic and international titles, and he joins the Blues ahead of the 2022/23 season with the goal of doing so.
Speaking about his move to Chelsea, Koulibaly stated, “I’m very happy to be here with this team at Chelsea.” It’s a big team in the world, and it’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League. Chelsea came first in 2016 to get me, but we didn’t make it. When they approached me, I accepted because they were desperate for me to join them in the Premier League. When I spoke with my good friends Edou and Jorginho, they helped me make my decision, so I’m very happy to be with you today.
“I want to thank the fans because I saw a lot of them in London and everyone on the plane was excited for me to be here.” So I want to thank them, and I hope that the season goes well and that we can provide some memorable moments for the fans.”
