THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES assured the Awoye community in Ondo State’s oil-rich Ilaje Council Area over the weekend that the oil company responsible for the recent spill would be held accountable to remediate, clean up, and compensate the victims.

On February 2, 2022, an oil vessel owned by Shebah Oil Company exploded, killing over ten people on board.

The residents of Awoye had petitioned the federal government for remediation, cleanup, and compensation.

As a result, the House of Representatives established a panel of inquiry comprised of members of the House committees on Host Communities, Petroleum Upstream, and Petroleum Downstream to investigate the communities’ petitions against the oil companies.

Dumnamene Dekor, Chairman of the House Committee on Host Communities, led other members in assessing the affected areas in the state and interacting with residents about the extent of damage to their communities.

The Ondo State government delegation was led by the Health Commissioner, Dr Banji Ajaka, and included government officials from the Ministries of Environment and Health.

“The team came to get facts and interact with the people living in the area, making moves on how the company responsible for the disaster can be held liable to remediate, clean up, and compensate the victims,” Dekor said during the visit.

“We have seen for ourselves from our interactions with the people, and by the grace of God, we will come up with our findings with the goal of addressing these problems for both the people and the operators, so that there will be a lasting solution.”
