Ikianbiri community in Bomo Ibe, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, witnessed an unprecedented gathering on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, as the Paramount Ruler, HRH Dr. Tony Zalakoro, hosted the “Ikianbiri Human Empowerment Programme.” The event, which drew dignitaries from across Bomo Clan, has been described as a record-breaking empowerment initiative in the region.
The programme was held under the leadership of HRH Dr. Tony Zalakoro, who is also the Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council in Bomo Ibe. Recognized as the most youth-friendly royal figure in the area, Dr. Zalakoro assembled high-ranking traditional leaders, political figures, youth leaders, and members of the Ikianbiri community to celebrate and support development and empowerment efforts.
Among the notable attendees was the representative of the Ibenanawei of Bomo Clan, HRM King Dr. WSJ Igbuburu (X), who was represented by the Paramount Ruler of Eniwari, HRH Darius Job. Also present were former Southern Ijaw Local Government Chairman, Hon. Kia Nigeria, also known as “Mr. Project,” Hon. Comrade Melbourne Eleke, and the leadership of the Bomo Federated Youth Council, led by its President, Comrade Ebipadei Angiama.
In his remarks, HRH Darius Job extended gratitude to God for blessing the people with a compassionate and visionary leader in HRH Dr. Tony Zalakoro. He urged other traditional leaders within Bomo Clan to emulate Dr. Zalakoro’s example in community service and youth engagement.
Hon. Kia Nigeria commended the royal father’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of his community. He described Dr. Zalakoro’s initiatives as a true demonstration of love and leadership. As a gesture of support, Hon. Kia donated ₦100,000 to the women of Ikianbiri, affirming his readiness to contribute to the community’s development.
In his address, HRH Dr. Tony Zalakoro attributed his actions to divine guidance. He emphasized that the empowerment efforts were rooted in his belief that if the people are willing and obedient, they will enjoy the prosperity of their land. The monarch reaffirmed his dedication to serving his people selflessly.
Highlighting the impact of Dr. Zalakoro’s leadership, Hon. James Jonahalu stated that almost every adult in Ikianbiri currently receives a monthly stipend ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦150,000, depending on their capacity or needs. He explained that this empowerment programme, initiated by the traditional ruler, is organized every two years as part of a broader vision to uplift the community economically.

The event also featured the symbolic commissioning of 10 new fibre canoes, which were donated to 10 women in the community. The initiative was praised as a significant boost to local women engaged in riverine economic activities, such as fishing and water transport.
In recognition of his exemplary leadership and youth-oriented programmes, the Bomo Federated Youth Council presented HRH Dr. Tony Zalakoro with an Award of Excellence, naming him “The Most Youth Friendly Highness in Bomo Ibe.” The council also appointed him as the Patron of the Bomo Federated Youth Council, an honor that reflects his longstanding support for youth development and engagement in the area.
Chiefs, community development committee members, youth executives, and representatives of both men’s and women’s groups attended the event in large numbers, expressing appreciation for the ruler’s efforts and reaffirming their support for his leadership.
