Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to some of its members’ proposal to depose the party’s national chairman.
Prior to this, Track News had reported that fifteen PDP NWC members had supported Ayu’s removal on Wednesday.
According to reports, the party’s National Chairman had the backing of four members who urged he remain in office.
Debo Ologunagba, the party’s national publicity secretary, refuted the rumor that Ayu was asked to resign during the meeting on Wednesday.
Ologunagba claims that he was present during the meeting and that topics connected to Ayu’s resignation were not covered.
He mentioned that the NWC members had discussed the makeup of the party’s presidential campaign council.
Ologunagba added that the national and several state chapters of the party that are in a crisis were also the subject of reconciliation talks.
Speaking about the crisis-affected states, the PDP chairman mentioned that the NWC members had discussions with the PDPs in Osun and Kano.
Ologunagba claimed that in order to address the conflict in the state chapters of the party, the NWC members resolved to form reconciliation committees.
He emphasized that Ayu’s resignation from office prior to the general elections in 2023 was not being called for.
Nyesom Wike’s administration in Rivers State had led the charge for Ayu to step down from his position.
Over time, the Governor’s camp criticized the unequal allocation of power that allowed the North to control important posts inside the party.
To those calling for Ayu’s resignation, whom he referred to as children trying to destroy the party, he said that he would insist on staying in office and wouldn’t take their calls seriously.
