Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDPproposed )’s boycott of the local government election, according to the leadership of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), will not halt the process.
The PDP had threatened to boycott the election because it believed it was unlawful and would waste public funds.
In an interview with Track News yesterday, the commission’s chairman, Segun Oladitan, stated: “We have not gotten a formal word from the PDP to boycott the process. Even so, they shouldn’t have abstained from voting because we are aware of the provisions of the Electoral Act that the party is citing as evidence that we lack the authority to hold the election.
“They ought to have taken part in the election rather than abstaining, and then allowed us to take that to court,” I said. All political parties were involved before the date for the local government election was set, and a PDP representative was present.
“We are proceeding with the holding of the election; we are not deterred by the PDP’s action. Election boycotts will not halt the process.
The PDP chapter in the state has been warned not to threaten to bring about a crisis over the way the local government election was conducted by Prince Gboyega Famodun, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State.
In a statement released by his media advisor Kola Olabisi in Osogbo, Famodun denounced the PDP’s threats made during a news conference yesterday when the party’s caretaker chairman, Dr. Akindele Adekunle, threatened that his party was ready to foment mayhem.
