Peter Obi Group seeks elections for Senate vacancies

The Peter Obi Support Network has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold bye-elections for three vacant Senate seats as soon as possible.
According to Track News, three seats in the Red Chamber became vacant about four months ago after the occupants resigned.

In the National Assembly, the vacant seats are Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Borno North Senatorial District, and Zamfara Central Senatorial District.

The seats were declared vacant after Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Abubakar Kyari were elected National Chairman and Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress on March 26.

Senator Muhammad Hassan Nasiha resigned on March 1 after being appointed as Zamfara State’s Deputy Governor.

Onwuasoanya Jones, the spokesperson for Peter Obi Support Network, told Track News on Tuesday that INEC was wrong not to hold bye-elections for three vacant seats.

Jones stated that depriving a people of representation, even for a single day or even a minute, violated democratic norms and standards.

He advised INEC not to waste any more time holding elections to fill those vacancies.

“Every day, the people of these constituencies remain without a representative in the Senate, depriving them of a key democratic right,” he said. INEC should not waste any more time in holding elections to fill those positions.

“It is therefore mandatory for the Electoral Commission to follow the laws that created her and conduct these elections, even if it is one day before the current session expires.”
