The Borno State Police Command has disbursed a total of ₦13.4 million to the families of ten police officers who lost their lives while serving in the line of duty.
The financial assistance was provided as part of the Inspector-General of Police’s Welfare Scheme and the Group Life Assurance programme, aimed at supporting the dependents of personnel who die in active service.
The presentation of the funds took place at the Borno State Police Headquarters in Maiduguri. Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid delivered the cheques to the beneficiaries on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The distribution was conducted in a formal ceremony attended by police officers, family members of the deceased, and other officials.
According to CP Abdulmajid, the initiative underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of its officers and their families. He emphasized that the payment was a demonstration of the IGP’s concern for the wellbeing of police personnel, both in life and after death. The Commissioner described the gesture as a means of showing gratitude for the service and sacrifices made by the fallen officers.
The beneficiaries, who are primarily the next of kin of the deceased officers, were selected in accordance with official records and verification procedures. Each family received a cheque reflecting the amount due under the welfare provisions, with the total sum amounting to ₦13.4 million across all ten families.
CP Abdulmajid urged the recipients to utilize the funds prudently and to maintain the values of discipline, patriotism, and resilience that their loved ones upheld during their service in the Nigeria Police Force. He reiterated that the Force remains committed to supporting the families of officers who pay the ultimate price in the line of duty.
The Inspector-General’s Welfare Scheme and Group Life Assurance are among several initiatives designed to boost morale within the Force and ensure that officers and their families are not left vulnerable in the event of unforeseen incidents. These programmes are funded and managed by the Police High Command as part of broader efforts to improve the conditions of service for personnel across the country.
Over the years, security challenges in Borno State, which has been heavily affected by insurgency and other forms of violence, have resulted in significant casualties among security personnel, including the police. Many officers stationed in the state operate under difficult and high-risk conditions. The disbursement of welfare support to families of fallen officers is seen as a vital step toward acknowledging the dangers they face and the ultimate sacrifices made in protecting lives and property.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Police Command and the Inspector-General for the financial support. Several of them conveyed gratitude for the recognition of their loved ones’ service and sacrifice. They also called for continuous support and better welfare for officers serving in high-risk areas, noting the importance of such assistance in sustaining morale and public confidence in the police institution.
The Nigeria Police Force has in recent times placed increased emphasis on officer welfare, especially for those serving in volatile regions like the North-East. In addition to financial support to bereaved families, there have been calls for better protective equipment, improved working conditions, and more robust insurance coverage for personnel on active frontline duty.
With the latest disbursement in Borno, the Force hopes to reinforce its commitment to caring for the families of fallen officers and to ensuring that their contributions to national security are never forgotten.
