Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria, said on Monday that his nation could not afford another civil war.
He urged the political elite to display acts of patriotism in order to preserve the unity of the country.
The president continued by saying that they needed to prevent the same things from happening again that sparked the country’s civil war in 1967–1970.
He spoke to former state chairperson of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change at the Presidential Villa in Abuja (CPC).
The President expressed hope for the survival of Nigeria’s unity.
The Forum of State Chairmen of the Defunct CPC gave the President a commitment that the organization will use its platform to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate.
The previous party has maintained its national organizational structure, the forum claimed.
According to a statement from President Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the CPC was founded as a result of President Buhari’s dedication to improving the standard of living for Nigerians.
In order to advance the interests of the country, he recommended political leaders to keep their priorities clear.
“We are Nigerian. According to the President, we will remain Nigerians as long as God so desires.
He maintained that it is imperative to stop the egotism that claimed about a million lives between 1967 and 1970 from happening again.
The president stated that the Federal Republic of Nigeria is our primary objective.
“People are what they are. I can assure you that although we are not flawless, we have earned our patriotism.
“All of the challenges have been with us since January 15th, 1966, until now. You get what I’m saying, right?
“One million of us were slaughtered by ourselves in order to save this nation.
More practical experience than that, in my opinion, is not possible.
“We are Nigerian. God willing, Nigeria and we would remain a single nation.
All former CPC members and other political personalities were urged by President Buhari to always keep the country’s unity, peace, and integrity in mind when making choices.
The previous party chairman was thanked for continually highlighting the accomplishments of the administration prior to the party’s merger to establish the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I commend all of the CPC members and the attendees of this conference for their steadfast dedication to the principles of democratic governance that we all embraced.
He went on to say that the tenacity with which we pursued our goals—which finally resulted in the success we recorded—remains as a brilliant beacon in the history of our beloved nation.
Former Party Chairman in Niger State and Chairman of the Forum Umar Shuaibu referred to the President as the “Patriarch of the CPC” and asserted that the party had maintained all of its structures across the country.
He pledged his support for President Buhari, especially during the approaching elections.
Shuaibu complimented the President for consistently demonstrating strong leadership, particularly in his commitment to upholding justice, objectivity, and integrity in situations involving elections.
He claimed that the opposition was formerly imprisoned and mistreated, but that is no longer the case.
“You did not deny them what they rejected you when they were in power.”
