2023: Group disagree with Bayelsa Speaker request for fourth term.
By Ibekimi Oriamaja
We disagree with Hon. Abraham Ingobere’s request for a fourth term because of issues of marginalization and access make life challenging for underrepresented and disadvantaged communities.
The Progressive Front of Brass Constituency III is comprised of influential figures from various political parties, including women, youth, and elderly (PFBC). The forum emerged from a crisis meeting in Yenagoa on July 25, 2022. The extensive discussion of political representation and marginalization by the (PFBC).
In their discussion they concluded that there are four (4) wards in the Brass Constituency. There are three (3) wards total—wards 7, 8, 9, and 10—but only ward 10 has retained power since 2012 which is in acceptable.
“That the Brass Constituency Three (3) House of Assembly seat has been held solely by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the previous 12 years (from 2012 to the present). In reality, the marginalization of wards 7, 8, and 9 has offended the sensitivities of our leaders”.
“That it is absurd that the same person, who has already completed three terms in office and reaped the rewards of being a legislator, is now vying for a fourth term at the expense of Wards 7, 8, and 9. This goes against the zoning scheme outlined in the PDP Constitution. Stakeholders do see this as a denial of them because inclusive politics is one of the pillars of representative democracy”.
“We reject Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere’s the speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly bid for a fourth term because there are other wards with eminently qualified candidates to represent the constituency in the State House of Assembly.
That we regret Mr. Abraham Ingobere’s decision to run for office a fourth time and declare our willingness to support any candidate, regardless of political affiliation, who can effectively represent us. We further ask that the PDP leadership not interpret this as a denial of Governor Douye Diri’s advice”.
“Despite the legislator’s poor performance, we also want to express our disappointment in the State PDP leadership for failing to take wards 7, 8, and 9 into account when choosing the next Assembly member before advancing the Speaker’s agenda for a fourth term”.
“We want to state for the record that the incumbent Speaker’s bid for a fourth term has polarized the electorate as many participants are finalizing their plans to leave the PDP in order to pursue their political ambitions on other platforms”.
