Controversy Erupts Over Proposed Meeting Of Obaseki, Shaibu With PDP Leaders
A likely meeting between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his embattled deputy, Philip Shaibu on Wednesday under the aegis of the State Executive Committee, SEC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has been caught up in controversy.
The notice of the meeting being circulated among PDP leaders in Edo State has been disowned by the secretary of the state chapter, Mr Hilary Otsu. Mr Otsu who is the designated official responsible for summoning party meetings has denied summoning the meeting bringing to surface the dynamics in the state chapter of the party.
The PDP in Edo State is fractured into at least three tendencies with a section aligned to the governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, another to his deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu and the mainstream aligned with the national vice-chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih.
Out of the 14-member State Working Committee, about three are with the Obaseki tendency while 10 are with Orbih. None of the committee members is firmly with Shaibu.
Disavowing a meeting of party leaders supposedly convened by the assistant secretary, Barr L.L. Ogedegbe with a signature that was supposedly imposed, Otsu in a statement circulated to party members and obtained by GWG.ng said:
“It has come to my notice that a certain notice of meeting has been sent to leaders of our party. Kindly note that the Constitution empowers ONLY the Secretary of the Party to call meetings. This purported notice, carrying an unverifiable printed signature is being circulated by mischief makers who intend to cause confusion and further divide the Party.
“I have not abdicated my responsibility to the party, so I advise you to ignore this invite as the Party will not take kindly to such acts of sabotage, going forward.
“Thank you and enjoy your day.”
Besides Obaseki and Shaibu other PDP leaders including former governors, and deputies among others were summoned to the meeting.
However, the disavowal by the PDP secretary with the consequences for attendance may have aborted the scenario of interaction between Obaseki and his embattled deputy, Shaibu at the meeting.
