Voter apathy mars LG polls in Niger
By Adeleye Kunle
There were low turnouts of voters at various polling units during conduct of Thursday’s Local Council Elections organized by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, NSIEC.
In Chanchaga and Bosso Local Government Areas, elections commenced around 12 noon, despite the presence of election materials and security personnel.
Track News learnt that the low turnout may not be unconnected to earlier announcement by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through its state chairman, Barrister Tanko Beji, calling on the party members to boycott the election, having filed a lawsuit in court challenging the process of the election.
Isah Adamu from Tilapia Unit and Makunkele Gidan Sarki Unit Tanko Yakubu Maji, presiding officers from the two LGs, expressed disappointment over the voters apathy, saying 13 political parties were on the ballot paper but only two participated in the election
