Wike and Atiku are not the PDP’s issue, says Akawor
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
Desmond Akawor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman in Rivers State, talked on Thursday about the instability engulfing the organization ahead of the general elections in 2023.
Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, and Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, are not to blame for the conflict, said Akawor.
In recent weeks, there have been arguments between former vice president Atiku and governor Wike over the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, who has refused to leave.
Northerners assuming leadership roles in the party had not satisfied Governor Wike’s camp.
In order to back Atiku’s bid for the presidency, Wike’s team requested that Ayu be replaced by a southerner if he ever decides to step down.
However, Ayu has persisted on continuing in his position, asserting that he was chosen to lead the party for a period of four years.
He continued by saying that he would not permit people, whom he referred to as children, to demolish the biggest opposition group.
Speaking to the Tracknews on the party’s dilemma, Akawor claimed that the southern PDP faction was at fault.
He pointed out that Governor Wike and his associates are battling for the equitable treatment of Southern PDP governors inside the party.
Akawor continued by saying it is unfair that people from the north hold most of the top posts in the party.
The presidential candidate, the National Chairman, and the BoT Chairman are all from the North, he declared. The North has the Deputy National Chairman. The issue is this. People ought to do it correctly, then. The governor (Wike) and the presidential candidate are not at fault for the issue (Atiku). The South and PDP are at odds.
