Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to calls by former Governor of Lagos State and 2023 presidential hopeful, Bola Tinubu, urging the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria to create a department of political affairs ahead forthcoming elections.

TrackNews reports that the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), had created the directorate for politics and governance ahead of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

It is believed that the church overseen by renowned clergyman, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, created the directorate to coordinate the affairs and activities of members interested in seeking political offices in 2023.

The RCCG also announced the appointment of Pastor Timothy Olaniyan, a Pastor in Charge of Province (PICP) Lagos Province 12 as the head of the directorate and directed the pastors at regional, state, zonal, and all other levels to appoint officials to coordinate the new directorate at such levels.

In this regard, Tinubu who is the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, urged the Muslim community to imitate the move.

Tinubu made the call at the Annual National Conference and Pre-Ramadan meeting of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) which was held in Osogbo, Osun State capital during the weekend.

The politician believed doing so would help the Muslim fold to mobilize support for faithfuls who are vying for different political positions.

Reacting to Tinubu’s call, Shehu Sani faulted the idea, saying that once religious groups in the North create a political department it will be a breeding unit for fanatical religiously-crafted political ideas in pursuit of a theocratic State.

Sani Tweeted: “Once religious groups in the North begins to set up political departments, it’s not just going to be ‘a department’ like in the RCCG, it’s going to be a breeding unit for fanatical religiously-crafted political ideas in pursuit of a theocratic State.

“Abeg, let the sleeping Lion lie.”
