Nigerian senators have threatened to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over the country’s deteriorating security situation.

TRACK news has learned that lawmakers questioned Senate President Ahmad Lawan at the start of plenary on Tuesday about why the issue of insecurity was not on the Order Paper.

The lawmakers were outraged by the terrorists’ threat to kill President Buhari, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other top Nigerian politicians, according to this newspaper.

After intense pressure, Lawan yielded and agreed that the issue of insecurity be discussed publicly in plenary on Wednesday rather than in closed session.

“We shouted to the President of the Senate that it needed to be discussed, and when he refused, we threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Buhari because the country is in danger,” a source told reporters.

This is not the first time lawmakers have threatened to oust President Buhari.

The National Assembly threatened to impeach the president in June 2018 if he did not agree to a list of demands.

Federal lawmakers clashed in May 2021 over opposition legislators’ threat to impeach President Buhari.

This new threat by Senators comes on the heels of two worrying terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, in the last month.

Terrorists suspected of being Boko Haram insurgents ambushed troops of the Nigerian Army Presidential Guards Brigade on Friday night around the Bwari Area Council of Abuja.

Three soldiers were injured and eight people were killed in the incident.

The attack came just a few weeks after terrorists stormed Abuja’s Kuje prison and freed hundreds of inmates, including Boko Haram suspects.

In a video, one of the terrorists threatened to kidnap President Buhari and other governors and senators in the country.
