Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has decried a situation that may see people of his generation still dragging political offices with the younger generation in Nigeria.

According to Obasanjo, such a situation is abnormal and shouldn’t be happening.

The former Nigerian leader however called for collaborative efforts between the older generation and younger ones in making the country better.

He said the ideas and experiences the older generation have can be harnessed by the younger generation who should be the ones running things in the country.

Tracknews reports Chief Obasanjo made the submission while speaking on Monday at the 2022 Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) annual lecture.

He said it is time for the older generation to step down and allow the younger generation build a better country while they only give necessary support as elder statesmen.

Obasanjo made the submission while reacting to a comment by Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi who said during the event that he was in primary school when the late Murtala Mohammed was in charge of Nigeria.

The former President said, “We need to have an intergenerational collaboration. Fayemi said he was in primary school when Murtala and Obasanjo were there. So, if people of the Murtala/Obasanjo era are competing with you as governor, then, something is wrong.

“The Murtala/Obasanjo group should be stepping aside. Whatever experience and knowledge we have, we should be able to give it to you and you should be able to give it to those coming after you, so that whatever you have, you are passing it down to those who are coming behind and not to start competing with you, but to make you have access to what will make Nigeria better.”
