AFCON: Tinubu commends Super Eagles’ resilience despite loss to Ivory Coast
In the wake of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final where the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a 2-1 defeat against the host nation, Ivory Coast, President Bola Tinubu has lauded the national football team for their resilient performance throughout the tournament.
The commendation was conveyed in a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Sunday.
President Tinubu acknowledged the tenacity displayed by the Super Eagles, emphasizing their talent and hard work on the field.
Despite falling short in the final match, the president expressed pride in the team, including the coach, crew, and entire management, for their dedication and perseverance in overcoming challenges and steadily improving their performance en route to the finals.
The statement from the President read, “President Bola Tinubu salutes the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their tenacious performance in the final of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.”
President Tinubu extended his commendation to the team and urged Nigerians to find solace in the fact that Nigeria had achieved a significant victory in the hearts of Africa and the world.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing the team’s grit, rigour, and determination, which resonated globally.

Despite the defeat, President Tinubu encouraged Nigerians not to be demoralized by the outcome.
He called for unity, resilience, and hard work, stating, “Let this passing event not dispirit us, but bring us together to work harder. We are a great nation bound as one by the green-white-green banner of resilience, joy, hope, duty, and untiring love.”
In a special message to the youth, particularly those involved in grassroots football, President Tinubu highlighted their potential to become heroes in the future.
He urged them not to relent in their pursuit of excellence, assuring that his administration is committed to making dreams come true.
