EPL: It really annoys me – Ex-Man United coach slams Red Devils over Son Heung-min, Willian

Former Manchester United coach, Rene Meulensteen has slammed the club over their failure to listen to his recommendations to sign both Son Heung-min and Willian.

Meulensteen said he was still annoyed despite it being nearly a decade ago when the club ignored him on both occasions.

The Dutch coach left the club following the appointment of David Moyes as United manager and Ryan Giggs as the assistant in 2013.

He spent 12 years at Old Trafford working with Sir Alex Ferguson and joined Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala afterwards.

He met Willian at the Russian club and he immediately recommended the Brazilian to United, though the Red Devils declined to make a move and instead Chelsea swooped.

Meulensteen’s recommendation for the Red Devils to sign Son in 2015-16 again fell on deaf ears at United.

Speaking to Manchester United’s official Scandinavian supporters club, he said: “It really annoys me a little bit because when Son just came to Tottenham so many years ago, I felt, after seeing him one or two seasons, this is the player United need to buy.

“Now that’s the player, because I actually rang David [Moyes] because they were looking for players and I knew Willian was a mad Man United fan.

“Anyway it never materialised. Willian has been outstanding for Chelsea and fantastic now for Fulham. I love to see him play, absolutely brilliant. He’s great. But it’s a shame, you know? You think to yourself, those players could have definitely made a difference.”
