The suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law, promoting transparency, and ensuring inclusiveness in governance.
His statement came on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, June 12, and was delivered through his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.
In the message, made public on Thursday, Fubara emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and civil liberties amid ongoing political unrest in Rivers State. He stated that the events in the state serve as a stark reminder of the fragile nature of democracy and the need for collective vigilance to protect it.

Fubara, currently suspended from office due to political tensions in the state, said his administration remains devoted to defending the rights and interests of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. He underscored that inclusive governance, transparency, and accountability remain key priorities for his team.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, Fubara encouraged unity across political divides. He urged all citizens to work together to build a society that acknowledges every individual, empowers them to reach their potential, and motivates them to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
He acknowledged that Rivers State’s democratic journey has been marked by both achievements and challenges. These, he said, reinforce the need to remain committed to democratic values. Despite his suspension, Fubara asserted that his government has pursued policies rooted in openness, fairness, and respect for civil rights.
Fubara also highlighted his administration’s efforts in establishing oversight mechanisms to promote accountability and maintain the rule of law. According to him, these systems are designed to sustain democratic practices and secure the state’s future.
In addressing the recent instability in Rivers, the governor pointed out that democracy cannot be taken for granted. He called on citizens to protect democratic institutions and promote peace and stability through collective engagement.
He emphasized the necessity of public participation in governance, noting that the people of Rivers State must act with unity, courage, and renewed purpose during these uncertain times. He described the situation as a pivotal moment requiring collective resolve to advance the state’s development.
Fubara also paid tribute to past leaders who contributed to the establishment and growth of democracy in Nigeria. He said their sacrifices laid the foundation for today’s democratic governance and urged citizens to build on those legacies.
