Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, explained why he chose Senator Kasim Shettima as his running mate on Sunday, Nigeria News reports.

Former Governor of Lagos State, in a statement to Vanguard, stated that the spirit of 1993 has returned to Nigerians in 2023.

Remember that late Chief MKO Abiola chose a fellow Muslim, Baba Gana Kingibe, as his running mate in 1993. Tinubu alluded to it, saying that the spirit of 1993 will return to Nigerians in 2023.

In the upcoming general elections, the Jagaban is undoubtedly referring to himself and Shettima.

“Senator Kasim Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all-important electoral victory, but also to step into the shoes of the Vice President,” Tinubu said of his choice of the former governor of Borno as his vice presidential candidate. He has my implicit confidence and faith as a man of talent, maturity, character strength, and patriotism.”

Tinubu said of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, “I am aware that many will continue to focus on a specific detail, the question of his faith.” However, if we truly understand the challenges that face us as a nation, we must also recognize the importance of putting competence in governance ahead of religious sentiment.

“In one of our fairest elections ever held, Nigerians embrace Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe, in 1993.”

“The spirit of 1993 has returned in 2023.” As such, the ticket we present today marks a watershed moment in our country’s political history. It represents our party’s determination to be a leading light among African political parties.

“The democratic process and decorum that characterized our presidential primaries and the selection of our vice presidential candidate exemplify why we are the people’s party and why we care about their future.”

“With this selection, the All Progressives Congress will undoubtedly remain the party that shows the way and leads this nation to its brightest future.” I beg you to join me on this journey to a brighter future.”
