Two persons were on Saturday evening confirmed dead and two others rescued after a three-storey building collapsed in Lagos.

The incident occurred at 4 Alayaki Lane, Freeman in Lagos Island, a densely populated neighbourhood, shortly after the downpour.

The Nation reports that this incident has brought to at least four, the number of collapsed buildings recorded since the May 1 disaster at Ebute-Meta.

Although the latest collapsed structure was said to be under construction, it was gathered that the said building had been sealed by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA).

Despite the notice and sealing of the premises, Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said the developer continued clandestine operations mostly at night and at the weekends.

He said: “The agency responded to the above incident which was already in violation of building safety protocols. It was discovered that the building had been captured by the LASBCA District Office and served with all Statutory Notices, Sealed at District and Central Enforcement Level.
“Further investigation determined that the developer had continued clandestine operations mostly at night and at the weekends.

“An unconfirmed number of people are still trapped inside the building. Two people have been rescued alive while two others were recovered dead.Search and Rescue operations ongoing.”

But acting Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, who was at the scene with his men, said three persons were rescued from the collapsed site and two bodies recovered.
