Ghana is in mourning following the tragic death of eight senior government officials and military personnel in a helicopter crash in the southern Ashanti region on Wednesday.
Among those confirmed dead are Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The ill-fated military helicopter was reportedly en route from the capital, Accra, to the mining town of Obuasi when it crashed under yet-to-be-determined circumstances.
In a statement released Wednesday, Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to the Ghanaian President, provided a list of other casualties in the crash. They include: Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate, Squadron Leader Peter (full name withheld)
President Nana Akufo-Addo has declared a period of national mourning, with flags ordered to be flown at half-mast across the country until further notice.
Further investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, as the nation reels from what is one of the most significant losses of senior officials in recent Ghanaian history.
