The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two security guards for allegedly setting a 44-year-old man, Basiru Aliu, on fire in the Agura Sabo area of Sagamu.

This was said in a statement by Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer, which was obtained by TrackNews Media on Wednesday.

The statement revealed that the suspects, Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan, mistook the victim for a thief while he was assisting his employer in moving his belongings from his previous residence to a new location in Ijokun.

Odutola highlighted that the security guards aggressively assaulted the victim and are alleged to have set him on fire.

She stated that Fatai Ifekoya, the victim’s employer, reported the incident to the command.

Odutola said “Aliu was reportedly helping his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, move belongings from his former residence to a new site in Ijokun at around 7 a.m. on Monday.

“While carrying out the task early on Monday, Aliu was said to have been violently attacked by Sodiya and Abatan, security guards employed by one of the residents, Kingsley Nwabueze.

“The duo allegedly poured a flammable substance on Aliu and set him on fire, believing he was trying to steal the items he was transporting for his employer,” she said.

Odutola, while confirming that the suspects had been arrested and would face charges of attempted murder, urged locals to report suspicious activities to the police instead of resorting to violence.
