The governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has reacted to the alleged torture of Linus Okorie, who is contesting for Ebonyi South Senatorial seat on the platform of Labour Party, by suspected Ebubeagu operatives.

The governor, who spoke to newsmen in Abakaliki, through the Commissioner of Information and State Orientation, Mr Uchenna Orji, on Monday, said the LP senatorial candidate is currently cooling-off at the police net to answer for the various crimes he (Okorie) committed.

He, however, accused the ex-lawmaker of circulating fake news and harbouring illicit drug traffickers in his club facility.

According to him: “Okorie was arrested in connection with serial crimes allegedly committed by him and the complicity of his club facility – the City Hub in promoting sundry crimes especially in peddling hard drugs and other illicit substances.”

The governor, Umahi, however exonerated Ebubeagu security operatives of having a hand in the purported torture and abduction of Okorie, saying the Ebubeagu operatives are trained and have the right by law to arrest any erring person in the society.

“The motive behind the weighty but baseless accusations leveled against the security outfit that carried out its lawful and professional duty in relation to the offences hanging around the neck of Linus Okorie and for which he had for the umpteenth time rudely and subversively evaded every attempt by the Police to arrest him to answer to the crimes he was suspected to have committed,” he added.

He accused Okorie of committing capital offences, “Contrary to the unfounded, irresponsible and vicious accusations widely circulated in social media for cheap political gains.

“Okorie was arrested and promptly handed over to the Police and he is pretty hale and hearty. He is already giving useful information on his roles in the offences reported against him,” the governor stated
