The Nigerien judicial system has initiated the legal process to expel the French ambassador from Niger, citing the violation of diplomatic protocols.

Security measures have been implemented around the French Embassy in Niamey, and the French ambassador has reportedly avoided appearing at the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs after being summoned.

According to Nigerien sources, the French ambassador no longer holds diplomatic status and lacks a residence permit. Reports suggest that the legal procedure for expelling the ambassador and his family from Niger has commenced.

On August 27, Niger’s foreign minister gave the French ambassador 48 hours to leave the country, accusing him of refusing to meet with the new authorities and alleging that France’s actions were contrary to Niger’s interests.

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated France’s condemnation of the coup and its support for ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, stating that the French ambassador would remain in Niger despite pressure from the coup leaders.

Niger experienced political turmoil when Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani led a military intervention on July 26, resulting in the ousting of President Bazoum, and the new military rulers accused France of interference in Niger’s internal affairs.
