Why Ban On Open Grazing Won’t End Herders/Farmers’ Crisis – Fayemi

Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi has said a ban on open grazing would not stop the herdsmen/ farmers crisis rocking the nation.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayemi stated that an alternative to open grazing must be provided

He said: “All our governors agreed that we must pursue modern ways of livestock and open grazing and other practices that are sustainable.

“We must embrace our national livestock transformation plan which may include the use of ranching and other grazing areas that are protected.

“We also acknowledged the fact that this will not happen in one fell swoop as it will not happen overnight. We need to have deliberate processes in ensuring that open grazing is phased out and modern livestock management practices are taken by states and we must support livestock farmers the way we support cassava and rice growing farmers through the anchor borrowers’ programme. We must support herders and those who want to engage in modern livestock programmes.”

In other news, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday, said killers and miscreants have joined the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The former Governor of Osun State stated this at his Ifofin, Ward 8, Ilesa East Local Government Area, on Friday after he revalidated his APC membership.

“Earlier today, I and members of my family revalidated our membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC at Ifofin, Ward 8, Ilesa East Local Government Area, State of Osun. I thank our leaders, members of our party and people of the community who came out en masse to receive me,” he posted on his verified Facebook page.

“This registration affords us the opportunity to deepen internal democracy in the party. Our members now have a say in whoever becomes the flagbearer either at the party level or for government elective positions.”
