Why the National Assembly Should Extend Buhari’s Tenure by Three Months – Ohanaeze Chieftain

Chuks Ibegbu, former spokesperson of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has proposed that the National Assembly prolong President Muhammadu Buhari’s term by three months.

The Chieftain of the Igbo sociocultural group advocated that the National Assembly invoke the theory of necessity in order to extend Buhari’s term in office. He argued that doing so would delay the swearing-in of President-Elect Bola Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu until electoral disputes have been resolved in court.

Mr Ibegbu added that May 29 should not be the made sacred as it marks Nigeria’s tragedy. He argued that October 1st should be the inauguration date.

In his words: “The National Assembly should make a resolution to extend Buhari’s tenure by three months as nothing is sacrosanct about MAY 29. In fact, MAY 29 is a minus in the history of Nigeria as it stands for past tragedies in Nigeria’s history. We should go back to October but the doctrine of necessity can be adopted in three months, and the heavens will not fall. Three months would allow all court cases on election matters as heavens will not fall.”
