The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has lampooned President Muhammadu Buhari over his failure to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians living in the North and in the country as a whole.

The spokesperson for the NEF, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made this known on Friday while reacting to a series of protests in the North.

reports that the protesters had gathered in Abuja last week to demand an end to the incessant killings of innocent citizens by bandits and terrorists in the North.

Speaking further, Baba-Ahmed said the federal government has failed to curb the activities of the criminals despite a series of promises made.

He said the killings in the North showed the Buhari-led government was incapacitated in tackling the activities of the terrorists and bandits.

He said: “Mr President should realise that he is bound by the constitution and the provisions for resigning is also enshrined there. Securing citizens is the fundamental responsibility of the state and if the state cannot secure citizens then the citizens have the right to demand of the President to do whatever is necessary.

“You cannot expect citizens to protect themselves if the government fails to do so.”

In another news, Hon Reuben Izeze, a member representing Ughelli South Constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly, was Thursday night, shot by unknown gunmen at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.

Although details of the attack were hazy as at of filing of this report, it was learnt that the gunmen opened fire at Izeze’s vehicle at close range.

It was gathered that the lawmaker survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Sources said the lawmaker’s driver was abducted during the attack was later released by the gunmen.

Police Public Relations Officer of the state Command, Mr Bright Edafe, confirmed the attack.
