WHO, Edo both warn against the use of four drugs.
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
The Edo State Government has issued a warning against the sale and use of four medicines, noting that the World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating the drugs for links to acute kidney injury and over 66 deaths among children in The Gambia.
Prof. Obehi Akoria, Edo State Commissioner for Health, issued a statement directing all pharmaceutical outlets that have the medicines in stock to dispose of them immediately through the proper channels.
Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cough Syrup are the medications. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global alert/warning over these four medicines, including Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cough Syrup,” according to the statement.
“These medicines are being investigated for possible links to acute kidney injury and the deaths of over 66 children in The Gambia.”
“Laboratory analysis of samples from each of the four products confirms that they contain unacceptable levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, both of which are toxic to humans and can cause death.”
“National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) officials will provide an update shortly.”
“Please be cautious! None of these drugs should be used. No cough or cold syrup should be given to a baby or toddler.”
