Carabao Cup: Why I dropped Ronaldo from squad to play Aston Villa – Ten Hag
Agency Report
Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo was missing from the squad that faced Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.
In the 37-year-old’s place, Anthony Martial made only his second start of the season.
Ten Hag explained why Ronaldo and other players were absent ahead of the game.
“Jadon [Sancho] ill, Cristiano ill, Antony injured,” he told MUTV.
Earlier in the day, Ronaldo was named in Portugal’s 26-man squad for Qatar alongside club teammates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.
Ten Hag also added that he is hopeful that Ronaldo will be available for the trip to Fulham this Sunday.
He said: “Difficult to say how he recovers. I’m not worried at all now.”
Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay all scored for United, as they won 4-2 at Old Trafford.
