BREAKING: Ekiti court refuses motion stopping Fayemi from dissolving local government chairmen
An Ekiti state High Court on Friday, October 12 refused to grant a motion seeking to restrain the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, from dissolving the 16 local government councils, The Punch reports.
According to the report, the application was filed by the state’s Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) led by the chairman of Ifelodun/Irepodun local government area, Dapo Olagunju.
In his ruling, Justice Abiodun Adesodun described the application as “unmeritorious, preemptive and speculative,” stressing that there was no compelling fact in the application to warrant the granting of the order.
The judge subsequently adjourned the substantive matter till Monday, October 22.
The local government bosses filed the case through their lawyer, Obafemi Adewale, while Tajudeen Akingbolu and Adeoye Aribasoye appeared for Fayemi.
Fayemi had challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the application on the grounds that the matter was speculative.
All the local government chairmen are members of the Peoples Democratic Party, while Fayemi is of the All Progressives Congress.
Meanwhile, residents of the state have been urged by the Nigeria police to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity for swift action, ahead of the inauguration of Fayemi on Tuesday, October 16.
Bello Ahmed, the Ekiti state commissioner of police, in a statement on Tuesday, October 9, signed by the police public relations officer, Caleb Ikechukwu, in Ado Ekiti, advised residents in the state to be security conscious and desist from conducts that could result in violence during the ceremony.
The police pleaded with residents to cooperate with security personnel deployed for the ceremony and report security threats in their localities to the nearest police station
