Defending Seun Kuti’s Assault On Police Officer Because Of Police Brutality On Civilians Is Crazy, Says Police Spokesperson
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, has criticised some Nigerians on Twitter for defending Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, for assaulting a police officer in a viral video.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, had ordered Seun’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman surfaced online.
In the viral video, Seun is seen involved in a heated argument with the officer who was standing in the middle of a busy road.
Reacting via his Instastory on Saturday, Kuti said the officer attempted to kill him and his family members, adding that the policeman had apologised and had been forgiven.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job,” Kuti wrote.
Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions to the viral video with some people on Twitter calling for Seun’s arrest while some Nigerians have defended the musician’s action, saying that the police officer got what he deserved as officers of the Nigeria Police are known for brutalising civilians in the country on a daily basis.
Addressing those defending Seun’s action, the FCT police spokesperson said that it is “crazy” to justify the musician’s action, saying that assault on a police officer is considered a serious offence regardless of who is involved.
The PPRO said, “Assault on a Police Officer is considered a serious offense regardless of the state you’re in.
“It is alarming to hear people say the Police Officer deserves what Seun Kuti did because Police Officers are brutalizing people everyday. They even went as far as sharing old videos of Officers assaulting civilians.
“It’s crazy! The IGP has shown zero tolerance towards Police officer’s misconduct even a couple were dismissed from the service, he will ensure in the same vein that Members of the public who assault the Police are punished in the ambit of d law.” (SaharaReporters)
