EPL: Chelsea pick striker to lead attack under Pochettino
Chelsea have opted to use Christopher Nkunku as their main striker next season and would not be signing a new frontman.
The Blues believe Nkunku is capable of leading the line if required, according to the Guardian.
Former Tottenham boss, Mauricio Pochettino was confirmed as the Blues’ new manager on Monday.
The Argentine has two biggest tasks in front of him which include trimming a massively bloated squad and to bring in a few key additions, with a goalkeeper, midfielder and striker his priorities.
The likes of Inter shot-stopper Andre Onana and Brentford’s David Raya have been linked to the club for the goalkeeper position; Sporting defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte is emerging as the club’s top target to partner Enzo Fernandez in the midfield.
For the striker position, Pochettino has reportedly identified Lautaro Martinez, as well as Napoli top scorer Victor Osimhen as possible options.
If that duo prove too costly, however, The Guardian is reporting that Chelsea will not panic into signing any old striker and are willing to trust in the options already at the club with the hierarchy believing incoming attacker Nkunku, who has a long-standing agreement to move to Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig, can plug the goalscoring gap and play as a No.9.
Nkunku scored 20 goals in the Bundesliga last season, as well as laying on 13 assists.
The Blues would be depending on the 25-year-old’s arrival, which they believe will go a long way in improving their clinicalness in front of goal
